Happy New Year 2026 and other things...

Hey, it’s 2026!

First and foremost, it’s a new year. Can’t complain yet. Which given we’re 2 days in doesn’t say much, but let’s be honest… there’s certainly been years in the not-too-distant past where 2 days in I was already sick of it.

I’m not going to do a bunch of the typical New Year, New Me stuff, or resolutions or any of that. So instead, here’s just some brief updates…

It’s been HOW MANY WEEKS since the supposed It’s A Blast updates were due?

I know, my last post said these were coming soon. And then radio silence. I just can’t bring myself to get back to work on it. It’s not a technical thing, I’m just not motivated, and if I’m going to do these things on the side for fun, I need them to be fun. What I realized in all of this is that the type of worlds you have to build for Horizon Worlds to be successful aren’t what I’m interested in building really. I don’t want to focus on monetization and a free-to-play world where I have to somehow sucker people into buying cosmetics or pay-to-win crap. It’s just not me or the type of games I enjoy playing OR making.

Will I come back to it? Maybe… won’t say I definitely won’t, but I can’t say that I definitely will either. For now, I have other things I’m enjoying that I’d rather focus on.

Let’s get retro!

Over the Christmas break I spent most of my time setting up and toying around with some of my retro systems. Most specifically, my Commodore systems, a C64c (that I modded with a mechanical keyboard) and my C128. They’re both attached to a pair of Checkmate retro displays (the C128 being connected to both for hot retro dual monitor action… in the like 2 games that support it). And I started firing up the assembler and toying around. And it wasn’t because it was work or a project or something I had to do, but just because I forgot how much I enjoy it.

Now I think I already mentioned that I’m working on a retro game (NES specifically) with some people. I can’t say much about it as it hasn’t been publicly announced. But I’m enjoying that and decided if I’m going to do a bit, I might as well go all in. So I think I might kick off some other little retro projects, something I’m in charge of and CAN announce once I have something to show, as well and really embrace what it is I enjoy. I’m currently thinking either C64 or Gameboy Color. As soon as I decide and get it started I’ll put something here… and probably on youtube and instagram as well just to kick it all off officially.

Of course I’m not committing to any kind of timelines here. I have “real” work I also have to get done and all (still game development, but still, when it pays the bills, it gets priority).

Wrap-up

So there we have it… a delay on one thing, lots of real work to be done, a reminder that I’m working on one cool retro game, and deciding that I think I need to also work on one or two more.

Not a bad way to kick off a year.

Now if only I can remember to post more often…
